GOAN YOUTH SPEAK:

“WE GET LOCAL BANDS, THE DELEGATES GET A.R. REHMAN”

WE DON'T NEED NO.... Local talent belting out songs at the IFFI festival promenade at Campal, sans an appreciable audience.

The 35th International Film Festival in Goa has an array of movies for film lovers young and old and from November 29th to December 9 its film bonanza time for all.  MELBA MERGULAHAO-CARVALHO ANTAO finds out how excited our youth are about the film bonanza including the star appearances.

I’m excited about the Film Festival – it’s such a big event for Goa. Quality films never come to Goa and anyway, everyone’s going to benefit - movie lovers, star gazers, Goan tourism, etc. I was looking forward to Vanity Fair.  Being a Bengali, I want to see Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali on the big screen.  Of the Hollywood stars I would have loved to see Pierce Bronson, Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant - I could go on and on…...

Of the Hollywood movies I would have preferred to see Troy (Brad’s cool, man!), Shark Tale, Day After Tomorrow,   Resident Evil – Apocalypse, Butterfly Effect, The Village, Ocean’s Twelve, and Morning Raga. It would be cool if Jennifer Aniston of Friends’ fame or George Clooney had come to Goa for IFFI. But alas! All we are promised is Val Kilmer and Rosario Dawson stars of Alexander

Thanks to IFFI, persons below 24 years can shoot, edit and screen their own films – it’s a new special talent competition with a theme, Nature & Violence with prizes sponsored by Zee Television.

However, it would be have been better if IFFI was held a little earlier or later for it seems to clash with the Exposition.  We want to participate in both events but can’t do full justice to both.

I’m disappointed that they will be screening movies that have already been seen, like Mission Impossible. I’d rather enjoy the latest Hollywood stuff like Bourne Supremacy as it was shot all over Goa. The Konkani movie, Amche Noxib shot in Panjim interests me because you get a picture of Panjim in the 50s and its colonial architecture.  I wish Bollywood superstars like Shahrukh Khan, Ash and Preity would have come to  the Festival instead of the stars of yesteryears only.

The International Film Festival of India will give us an exposure to a different genre of films besides the usual commercial films.

However, I must say that I am disappointed to know that there are very few award-winning films at the festival. To ensure the success of this Festival the infrastructure is very important. It was rather alarming to see  some road work still pending and policemen struggling to control the crowds.

 Arun Pednekar, Commerce student, Panjim

We can’t afford the exorbitant tickets at the INOX – we are students, you know.  So I went to Miramar beach and watched Mission Impossible for the umpteenth time.  Couldn’t they screen some more recent movies for those on the beaches while the privileged at the K.A. and INOX get the latest.  On the beach we get music from local bands while the delegates get A. R. Rehman.  Goans, especially Panjimites,  went through months of dust, gravel,  traffic jams, terrible roads, noise….and we get the crumbs while the delegates are in the luxury of the auditorium. Maybe things will be better next year, if IFFI becomes a permanent event in Goa.

Devika Naik, 23,  C.A. student, Margao

From the Bollywood movies that are going to be screened, almost all have been screened in Goa before but I would love to see the latest Oscar nominated, Shwaas. There are other all-time favourites like Mother India, Pather Panchali, etc. But the list per se is not impressive as most of the Indian films have been shown in Goan theatres like Koi Mil Gaya, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. However, I would love to see Maqbool  and Chokher Bali.

What bothers me most about IFFI is that the multiplex run by INOX, has been built by the Goa government with taxpayer’s money and that too worth crores of rupees. In other states like Maharashtra, INOX has built multiplexes in Mumbai and Pune with its own money and not the government’s. If the Goa government was so sure of revenues around the year, why couldn’t it ask INOX to build the multiplex with their own revenues?

I think IFFI is going to be an affair for the rich and beautiful who will sail on boats from Fort Aguada to Kala Academy and watch select movies. The common man will still have to jump over the pot holes, burn his pocket and watch a movie or two. Hope they have generators, else our favourite movies could be “Black outs”. Incidentally, my favourite movie in the recent past has been Life is Beautiful.

Can the GOAN OBSERVER or other newspapers give us reviews of the good movies so that the Goan public does not miss out on the good flicks?

Sonu Raikar, 20, science student, Margao

‘Disappointment’ is want I felt when I read in the newspapers that Amitabh Bachchan and may be Sharmila Tagore will be in Goa for IFFI.  Cannes gets the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Penelope Cruz, Richard Gere, etc.  IFFI at Goa get’s what – some two-cent Hollywood unknown?  Why couldn’t they rope in Tom Cruise – he goes to the Cannes Festival. Even ageing Sean Connery would’ve been a great to have in Goa – our hotels like Taj Exotica and Aguadaare world class!
