MAKING IT IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Food technology is a field that has witnessed much advancement in recent years. In the modern scenario there is a growing demand for processed foods that are safe, convenient, nutritious and quality assuring. The food industry has responded positively to this by developing new technologies to cater to the needs of the consumer market.

Food technology has responded to industrial de­mands by developing new methods for the process­ing, preserving and packaging of food stuffs and the evalua­tion of their nutritional value. The different areas of specialisation in this sector are in food processing, preservation science, packaging technology, quality management, storage studies, transportation, hygiene and sanitation, waste management etc.

Job Market
A qualified food technologist can find suitable em­ployment in food processing companies, R & D labo­ratories, hotels, hospitals, processed food exporting companies, slaughter houses, poultry and dairy farms, sugar mills etc.

Eligibility
A background in science is a necessary pre-requisite for entry in this field. The aspirant who has passed the +2 level in the science stream can take up a four year degree course in Food Technology. For post graduation in Food Science & Technology (FST) or allied subjects, the candi­date should have a university degree in Chemistry/ Bio­chemistry/ Microbiology .

Food Craft Institutes and Hotel Management Institutes conduct a one year’s full time diploma courses in bakery and confectionery, canning and food preservation.

The Department of Chemical Technology, Mumbai and lIT, Kharagpur offer engineering oriented programmes that focus on the design and manufacture of processing equipments and on the science of preserv­ing foods. The programme offered by Delhi University and SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai are more fo­cussed on catering and food production.
